The Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir yesterday presented a letter of appointment to his eldest son, Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz, proclaiming him as the Tunku Besar Seri Menanti.
It was a ceremony steeped in tradition at the Balairong Seri, Istana Besar Seri Menanti near here.
Tunku Ali proclaimed his loyalty to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
This was only the third time in 120 years that the Tunku Besar Seri Menanti has been appointed.
The previous two holders, Tunku Burhanuddin and Tuanku Muhriz, held the title for 73 and 43 years respectively.
About 700 guests attended the ceremony, including Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and wife Raja Datin Seri Salbiah Tengku Nujumudin, state executive council members, assemblymen and heads of government departments.
Also present were Tuanku Muhriz's consort Tengku Aishah Rohani Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud and other members of the royal family.
Tunku Ali, 32, is holding the title previously held by his father prior to his proclamation as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar on Dec 29 last year.
The Tunku Besar Seri Menanti is the most senior of the Putera Yang Empat (Four Princes).
The other three are Tunku Laxamana, Tunku Muda Serting and Tunku Panglima Besar, held respectively by Tunku Naquiyuddin Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar, Tunku Tan Sri Imran Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar and Tunku Nadzaruddin Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar.
The duties of the Putera Yang Empat include supervising the royal court, advising the ruler and overseeing palace officials.
Additionally, the state constitution provides that the Tunku Besar Seri Menanti shall be a member of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang, the council of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the ruling chiefs, comprising the four Undang and Tunku Besar Tampin
